Figure 1: H&E staining on a diaphragm section of BL10 mouse. Insert showing neither inflammatory foci or central nuclei.
Inflammation: Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E)

Figure 2: H&E staining on a diaphragm section of an MDX mouse. Insert showing both inflammatory foci and central nuclei.
Hematoxylin stains basophilic structures dark blue/violet including all structures containing nucleic acids such as the cell nucleus. Eosin stains acidophilic structures, such as the cytoplasm, a red/pink color. H&E stained muscle sections can be assessed for area of inflammation, total number of central nucleated fibers, and muscle size diameter variation. These assessments help quantify the pathology in diseased mice.

Figure 3: Central Nuclei in diaphragm section of BL10 (n=8) versus MDX (n=8) male mice at 14 weeks. Mean with standard error showing statistical significance (***) with a p-value of <0.0001.

Figure 4: Inflammatory foci in a diaphragm section of BL10 (n=8) versus MDX (n=8) male mice at 14 weeks. Mean with standard error showing statistical significance (***) with a p-value of <0.0001.
